We had a strong attendance for the Annual Race Debate review which was held at the Hare and Hounds on 5th February. It seems that many members have already confirmed their racing plans for 2016 and whilst our two Elite ‘Age Groupers’ Graham Plews and Sarah May are coming back from injury, we are well represented in a variety of races for 2016.
Going ‘long’ in 2016 are Carl Dawson who is doing the Outlaw in July and Stuart Blagborough who following his successes previously in Mexico and Bolton (a man of contrasts!) is undertaking the Lakesman in July.
Our international representation is also strong with Simon & Caroline Fox heading to Norway for the Ironman 70.3 course and our very own Legend, Colin Brooke will be completing the Alpe d’Huez in July.
There is a sizeable group who will be doing the Leeds WTS course on the 12th June. This one is an Olympic distance and is likely to be a fast course with a terrific atmosphere. It will be great to see our distinctive club kit on show at this global event.
We’re still in Duathlon season at the moment with several club members partaking in the 2-Up Duathlon in March – always a good event with lots of competitive spirit and rivalry. There are then a few sprint events confirmed, including Clitheroe with it’s infamous climb (or walk…) up Jeffrey Hill before we embark on the full tri season (including outdoor swims) in May.
Following on from it’s popularity in 2015, there is a lot of interest in the Adventure Triathlon Series races. These incorporate The Slateman, The Sandman and The Snowman. All based around North Wales, they offer something a bit different, whether it’s running along a beach, up a mountain or a sea swim. In 2015, Anne Johnson was 1st woman in her age-group (3rd overall) in the Snowman and we’re thinking that she’ll be going for the triple in 2016, possibly bagging the prize of a trip to Nevis (The Caribbean island not Scotland….). Currently, we’ve got several members committed to the Slateman but I’m sure as the season progresses, we’ll see more entries confirmed. The Sandman is always one of the last of the season and a good race if you’ve got some late fitness!
We’re looking to see if there is interest in the Castle Howard Olympic Distance tri on the 23rd July. This is a reasonably local race in North Yorkshire and an opportunity to make it a bit of a social too. There is weekend camping and it’s a scenic and well organised event. Keep an eye on the Club Facebook page to see if this is confirmed.
Finally, we’ll also be looking to have several teams in the Club Relays on the 21st August. Stuart Blagborough will be coordinating the teams so if you are up for it, please do get in touch with him to put your name in the hat.
There were suggestions for a few away days (Dragon ride in Wales, Flanders and Yorkshire Dales) so do keep an eye on the Club Facebook page for more details if they are confirmed. Fiona Christian is still banging on about a Club delegation to either Challenge Aruba or the Indian Ocean triathlon in October & November. At the moment it’s just a thought….but she’s working on the ‘logistics’!
