Clitheroe Tri Bike 2Driving over to Clitheroe early on Sunday morning the car vdu was showing an outside temperature of -1C! The fresh snow on the hill tops on the road to Burnley made me wonder what it was going to be like at the summit of the infamous Jeffery Hill. The only club members brave enough or daft enough to tackle a triathlon with a 27% hill on the bike leg were Simon Fox and Graham Plews. Simon and Graham both set off after 11am bye which time the temperature had warmed up nicely. Simon had a slightly later swim start so was chasing Graham for 11 minutes…would he catch him? After the 400m swim Simon had already taken a minute out of his club mate and adversary. The hilly and technical 30Km bike leg turned this deficit around giving Graham a one minute advantage into T2.

Clitheroe Tri Run Simon

Clitheroe Tri Run 1

The run would decide the outcome! After his defeat last year in the same race Simon was accused of keeping a very low profile for some time after. This year Simon was to be the victor by 1min 48sec. but still thought it prudent to book a holiday in SE Asia immediately after the race just as a precaution! Despite being significantly slower than last year Graham still walked away with the 60+ age-group prize. The race attracted a respectable entry of around 300 competitors. Simon finished in 57th and Graham 64th place overall so not a bad club performance. Finally, a big thanks must go to Rhonda Plews and Caroline Fox for their unwavering support.
