The monthly ‘Away Ride’ was last weekend (16th April) and hosted by Chris Lees – long time club member and recently retired – which means he is extremely fit as he is riding his bike every day! We travelled to the outskirts of Barnsley and after our pre-ride feed (excellent coffee & cakes courtesy of Chris’s better half Sara), completed a 90km ride on mostly undulating roads – the Garmin reading said 700m climbing but it felt pretty flat when compared to our own Calderdale and consequently, the increased mileage didn’t take too much out of the legs. We had a good bunch out although we were missing Colin the Legend (he got the dates mixed up) and Roger (no idea where he got to!). The coffee stop was the very pleasant Farm Cafe in Whitley (http://thefarmcafewhitley.co.uk/) where for future reference, there is excellent coffee and a spa on-site. Fortunately, Fiona persuaded herself that the subsequent 20km of headwind would equate to a facial peel and she would come back another day for a massage. We made it back in one piece with only the one near death skirmish with a joy riding lunatic and Richard Makin showing off near Sagan like ability to get out of trouble quickly. Back to Chris’s house and we finished off the cakes with plenty of post-ride humour and tea. A grand day out. Thanks to Chris and Sara for their hospitality and the riders Sarah May, Andy Lynex, Fiona Christian, Richard Makin, Laura Wright, Dexter Wright. Well worth getting out of Calderdale once a month for some different riding and a change of scene. Join us for the next one scheduled for 21st May and keep an eye on the Facebook page for more details.
