Quick’ish report from North Wales Conway Middle distance on Saturday 16/7.
Arrived registration on Friday to be warned about infestation of jelly fish and severe weather in Snowdon area, fortunately our accommodation had not been set ablaze – welcome to Wales!.
Sat Morning, good news, no jelly fish as they had been killed off by a sewerage overflow just down to coast so sea unfit to swim (great I went because I have never done a sea swim tri). Event changes to a long distance duathlon. Lots of grumbles and moans with some withdrawals or swapping into standard distance race (wimps), especially among those in GB age group kit or riding TT bikes.. Oh,weather warnings are now being reinforced, it will rain very very hard, plus windy gusts, for all the race and the roads in the mountains are very dangerous on descents. Well I am there, so lets go for it, never done a a duathlon either – now I know why!
5k dash along the prom and back then onto the bike. Legs shredded and struggled with 3 very very sharp climbs in first 5k of bike – Copley lane like – but at least the rain kept me cool!.
One of the toughest bike rides I have ever done, not just conditions, but Snowdonia is very lumpy. Back to the beach – eventually – seriously considering packing it in as I see other slower entrants giving up. But I already have my finishers tee-shirt so battle on. Then bugger me sun came out 2k from finish.
I am very sore from holding on tight coming down the hills through the clouds and pouring rain (bum clenching moments), i got cold despite rain jacket and I am last of the middle distance finishers (only just) but still no DNF after 13 years of Tri.
If you like steep hills and lots of them I would recommend this race, but weather is a problem in Snowdonia.
