When did I become obsessed? (Diary of a ‘newish’ open water swimmer)
Jan 2014 – New Year’s Resolution – learn front crawl.
As I was already a fell runner and cyclist decided, along with two friends Anne (Johnson!) & Angela), to have a go at a sprint triathlon. After intensish training and a lot of discussion over coffees & cake during the summer, we committed and entered our first sprint tri.
Sept 2014 – Skipton Late Summer Tri (me on the right)
Discussion followed re future tri’s – but what if the swim wasn’t in a pool??
Jan 2015 – Filled with enthusiasm I Googled
‘Open water swimming holidays’ Result – SwimTrek!! Booked on their ‘Intro to Open water in Mallorca’
Along with further sprint tri’s with pool based swims Anne, Angela & I ventured in to the open water.
May 2015 – Salford Quays for open water inductions with USwim and the Helly Hansen Centre. The other two seemed very confident. I took a while to get used to high quay walls and deep water but stuck with it.
July 2015 – The Mallorcan Intro was exhausting. Sea swims in the mornings with training/drills at the Best Pool in the afternoons. Came home with a video – how could my technique be so bad? Addiction had set in and when an email came from SwimTrek re an inaugural Cornish holiday based around places I remembered as a child booked on it.
Despite fighting the traffic on the M62 continued at USwim during the summer and managed the Epic Ullswater mile.
September 2015 – Cornwall – What a great holiday. A flexible group who were happy to swim where-ever the local guides chose depending on tides, weather and wind conditions. There were beaches that hadn’t changed since I’d first visited them and we had the chance to swim around St Michaels Mount and out to Godrevy lighthouse as well as coastal swims.
Feb 2016 – Barely in to New Year and where am I booking? Due to circumstances it was Mallorca revisited plus I noticed Durdle Door – Jurassic Coast so booked that as well! Also booked Epic Events three lake swims in June, July and August.
Jun 2016 – Another Intro in Mallorca and I knew what to expect and wasn’t disappointed. Exhausted again! I came home with an improved technique video. Noticed Burgh Island, South Devon on SwimTrek web-site. Husband would be mountain biking in Scotland – I booked a place!
Jul 2016 – On a beautiful summers day 10 of us swam around Burgh Island. With a lot of supporters on the beach it was a very sociable event. A strong tide made it an adventurous 3km swim!
Aug 2016 – Twenty of us met at 8am at Lulworth Cove for our briefing before our 3.5km swim to and through Durdle Door. Met swimmers from previous trips and others who are regulars at USwim at Salford Quays.
During the summer I managed to get my three Epic Event swim medals.
What next? I’d like to have a go at the Bosphorous next July. Something to work towards.
And what happened to the sprint tri with an open water swim? No time as I’m too busy swimming!!
