April away ride – hosted by Chris Lees

By | April 21st, 2016|Uncategorised|0 Comments

The monthly ‘Away Ride’ was last weekend (16th April) and hosted by Chris Lees – long time club member and recently retired – which means he is extremely fit as he is riding his bike every day!  We travelled to the outskirts of Barnsley and after our pre-ride feed (excellent coffee & cakes courtesy of Chris’s better half Sara), completed a 90km ride on mostly undulating roads – the Garmin reading said 700m climbing but it felt pretty flat when compared to our own Calderdale and consequently, the increased mileage didn’t take too much out of the April away ridelegs.  We had a good bunch out although we were missing Colin the Legend (he got the dates mixed up) and Roger (no idea where he got to!).  The coffee stop was the very pleasant Farm Cafe in Whitley (http://thefarmcafewhitley.co.uk/)  where […]

Ampleforth duathlon – by Laura Wright

By | April 21st, 2016|Uncategorised|0 Comments

Ampleforth Duathlon last Sunday was the inaugural race of this well organised and fun event. Undulating runs and bike ride with the start based at the scenic Ampleforth Abbey – organiseAmp 1d by York Tri Club. 11am start so plenty of time to get up there without starting out stupidly early. Would be nice if Calderdale Tri could support this event in 2017. Oh, and did I mention I was 1st in my age group (50-59) out of 4! (And free photos, courtesy of Walkers wit

Windsor duathlon – by Laura Wright

By | April 21st, 2016|Uncategorised|0 Comments

IMG_0005 The week before (and the reason Ampleforth felt like a walk in the park), Dex and I completed Windsor Duathlon. The organisers were unlucky in that heavy rain the night before had turned the transition area into a quagmire, and proceedings kicked off an hour late due to inept parking marshalling. Being part of the age group duathlon qualification, we were in the midst of serious athletes, with what I thought was a harsh cut-off of 3.5 hours. Windsor Great Park is indeed iconic, but this was somewhat lost on me with a hill start for the 10K run (I felt like an old pit pony), a wallow in deep mud to exit transition followed by the same hill start into a challenging 4 circuit 40K bike ride with a few slow pulls and a couple of cheeky inclines. Mercifully, […]

Clitheroe Triathlon – Race Report

By | April 13th, 2016|Posts|0 Comments

Clitheroe Tri Bike 2Driving over to Clitheroe early on Sunday morning the car vdu was showing an outside temperature of -1C! The fresh snow on the hill tops on the road to Burnley made me wonder what it was going to be like at the summit of the infamous Jeffery Hill. The only club members brave enough or daft enough to tackle a triathlon with a 27% hill on the bike leg were Simon Fox and Graham Plews. Simon and Graham both set off after 11am bye which time the temperature had warmed up nicely. Simon had a slightly later swim start so was chasing Graham for 11 minutes…would he catch him? After the 400m swim Simon had already taken a minute out of his club mate and adversary. The hilly and technical 30Km bike leg turned this deficit around giving Graham […]

CTC start the season Down Under

By | March 19th, 2016|Posts|0 Comments

So the start of the Tri season has begunColes bay

Intrepid CTC members Fiona Christian & Andy Lynex recently travelled to Tasmania, along with their bikes.  The plan was initially to enjoy some early season long rides to try and get into some sort of shape after a winter of mostly turbo training in the UK.

Midway into their holiday, cycling in the beautiful Freycinet National Park, they came across an advert highlighting a local triathlon taking place on their last day in the area, the Coles Bay Triathlon – such a coincidence!  There was a middle distance and a sprint….so they opted for the sprint, Fiona defends her decision saying, ‘we had no kit, we hadn’t been out riding more than 60km all winter and it was 30 degrees heat’.

They managed to register just one hour before registrations closed […]

Race Debate Review

By | February 12th, 2016|Posts|0 Comments

We had a strong attendance for the Annual Race Debate review which was held at the Hare and Hounds on 5th February. It seems that many members have already confirmed their racing plans for 2016 and whilst our two Elite ‘Age Groupers’ Graham Plews and Sarah May are coming back from injury, we are well represented in a variety of races for 2016.
Going ‘long’ in 2016 are Carl Dawson who is doing the Outlaw in July and Stuart Blagborough who following his successes previously in Mexico and Bolton (a man of contrasts!) is undertaking the Lakesman in July.
Our international representation is also strong with Simon & Caroline Fox heading to Norway for the Ironman 70.3 course and our very own Legend, Colin Brooke will be completing the Alpe d’Huez in July.
There is a sizeable group who will be doing the Leeds WTS course on the 12th June. This one is […]

Important Notice!

By | January 26th, 2016|Events|0 Comments

To all CTC members Saturday Rides We would like to make the Saturday rides more interesting and inclusive. From February the first ride each month will be a ‘social ride’ and will be at a speed, distance and route that is suitable for beginners and less strong riders. We will also restart the ‘away-days’ which proved to very popular in the past. Depending on races, holidays etc we will aim to have ‘away-day’ ride on the third Saturday of each month. We will aim to keep the drive distance as short as possible but sufficient to take us to new roads to ride. The rides will be longer than the usual Saturday morning rides. Please feel free to volunteer to organise any of these rides. Chris Lees and Colin Brooke have already offered to arrange rides from their home locations. Provisional schedule as follows: 06-Feb 20-Feb 05-Mar 19-Mar […]
